Although I don't mind trying different things (like duck's tongue), a few items on the menu just seem a little much of a stretch for me. Here are a few photos of the menu at our hotel.
While in Beijing, almost every lunch and dinner was a traditional Chinese meal (several dishes served family style on a large turn table in the center of a large round table). Its always neat to see, smell, and taste the local offering.
Seriously, our trip is going really well. At times it is hard not being able to connect with Sarah, but I know it will just take time. Jonda keeps telling her a line from Junior in the Veggietales Rumorweed movie: "He's a really nice man". I keep telling Sarah that she'll learn to love me. In the meantime, I occasionally try to bribe her a little. Today, I bought her some vanilla ice cream (which she loved). But the brown-nosing only lasts a little and she still is not fond of me looking at her. My love for her will continue. I am reminded of two passages, the later of which speaks of the greatest love of all:
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
Romans 8:38-39 "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

It's very touching to read your words, John. Your love for Sarah is evident through your words. Looking forward each day to your posts.
We love and miss you,
Dani for all 5
Congratulations! I pretty much starved while in China. Was on a fruit & Coke diet. Oh well, I was busy taking care of our baby anyways. Have a safe trip back home :) Amy in MN
Gross--I do not think I'd be appreciative of their cuisine...
I'm hoping for a quick attachment with Sarah and the whole family--it's great that you are being so patient.
Jonda,
I am a friend of Diana's, and found your blog through her.
Sarah is absolutely gorgeous. It reminds me so much of our time a year ago in China meeting our daughter, Ellie. She was very withdrawn for almost our entire time in China, and we were quite worried. The other new babies in our travel group seemed to be adjusting far more quickly (our daughter wouldn't even touch anything other than formula, and she was 13 months old).
A year later, she is such a delight -- full of laughter, hugs and a wicked sense of humor. It took a good deal of time to start seeing that personality, but I also think that she really needed that grieving time to be able to get to where she is now.
You are a beautiful family, and I'm really enjoying following your journey. Enjoy these special moments (and the lovely weather!). And get ready for fabulous and tasty food in Guangzhou!
